Opportunities for Digital Transformation in Petroleum & Mining Sector

Abstract

Opportunities for digital transformation in the petroleum and mining sector exist for 4IR use cases in UAV, unmanned aerial vehicles (aka drones), advanced analytics, artificial intelligence, intelligent sensing, industrial internet of things, robotics, modeling, cloud computing, 3D Printing, VR/AR/MR, virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality.

My talk will cover five focus areas with opportunities for value creation by improving productivity, reliability, efficiency or safety; and generating cost saving. Overall, the goal of digital transformation is to either improve existing business practices or re-imagine how the work is done to deliver competitive advantage and create value for the organization.

Disruptive technology deployment or existing workflow improvement starts by selecting an area of interest or leakage through critical assessment of existing workflow. Talk will explore how to implement actions to improve a selected workflow with significant time saving; turning months into days. Typical example is subsurface logging data integration, fusion end-to-end, interpretation and extracting recommendations for business decision making. Implementing cyber-physical framework including advanced data fusion, machine learning and AI driven descriptive, predictive and prescriptive analysis will result in data driven reports with real insights and value. Scaling of work processes is another example, involving integration of multiple data sources, sensors, legacy systems to develop an integrated workflow for remote geological assessment based on drones and remote sensing technologies.

Key terms: 4IR, digital transformation, mining and petroleum sector, UAV, advanced analytics, artificial intelligence, IIoT, robotics, modeling, cloud computing, 3D Printing, VR/AR/MR,
